Mount Omuro – Distance 1 km
Mount Omuro is a grass-covered, dome-shaped volcanic cone located in the Futo District of Ito City. This iconic mound is one of the most popular attractions on the Izu Peninsula and has been designated as a natural monument. The Mount Omuro Chair Lift is less than 1 kilometer from the I Love Izu vacation house. The lift transports visitors to the summit, where they can walk along the rim of the crater and enjoy a panoramic view in all directions. On clear days, it’s possible to see Mount Fuji, Sagami Bay, and Oshima Island.
Around February or March, depending on the weather, the annual mountain burning event takes place, attracting many spectators. You can also enjoy a BBQ party and take in the view of Mount Omuro from the BBQ area at the I Love Izu vacation house.
Izu Shaboten Zoo – Distance 1.1 km
Izu Shaboten Zoo offers a unique experience where visitors can closely interact with animals that roam freely throughout the park. A boat tour allows guests to explore a pond dotted with several islands, home to various species of monkeys, parrots, and lemurs. Additionally, you may encounter flamingos and capybaras along the shoreline. The renowned "Original Capybara Open-Air Bath" is available during the winter months, from late November to early April.
The zoo also features an extensive cactus garden, showcasing hundreds of different types of cacti and succulents from around the world.
Sakura no Sato – Distance 1.4 km
Sakura no Sato is a large park located at the foot of Mt. Omuro in Ito City. The park features expansive grassy areas and boasts 1,000 cherry trees from 40 different varieties. It is renowned as one of the best places for cherry blossom viewing on the Izu Peninsula and is ranked among the top 100 viewing sites in all of Japan. Cherry blossoms in the park are visible from September to May.
The Sakura no Sato Festival takes place in early April, coinciding with the peak of the cherry blossom season. During this time, the sight of the cherry trees in full bloom, illuminated against the dark night sky, is truly spectacular.
Izu Granpal Park – Distance from I Love Izu 2.3 km
Izu Granpal Park is a theme park that offers a variety of fun rides and attractions, making it a great place for families to spend the day together. The park features numerous rides, restaurants, a dog park, and much more. During certain times of the year, the park hosts "The Gran Illumi," an impressive illumination event where thousands of lights create one of the largest and most spectacular light displays in Japan.
Other popular attractions include a 400-meter zip line, a merry-go-round, go-karts, a water balloon ride, a lovers' shrine, life-sized dinosaurs, play equipment for small children, and a ship-shaped 3D maze.
Lake Ippeki – Distance 4.4 km
Lake Ippeki is the largest lake on the Izu Peninsula, known for its beauty and often referred to as the "Eye of Izu." A well-maintained scenic walking path encircles the shore, making it a popular hiking destination. The trail is mostly flat and easy to navigate, offering superb views of the surrounding landscape. Lake Ippeki is particularly stunning in the fall when the leaves change color and their reflections dance on the lake's surface. On the far side of the lake, there is a torii gate that appears to float on the water. Visitors can enjoy a picnic by the lake, have fun in a paddle boat, or relax at the lakeside café.
There's also a pier to explore and a quiet, sheltered footbath where you can soak your feet while taking in the serene surroundings.
Jogasaki Coast – Distance 7.4 km
Jogasaki Coast is a stunning section of coastline in Izu, characterized by massive volcanic cliffs that rise dramatically from the sea. This landscape was formed many years ago by an eruption of Mount Omuro. The area offers breathtaking views and picturesque scenery. A peaceful nature trail meanders along the coast, providing ample opportunities to appreciate its natural beauty.
Notable landmarks such as the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge and the Kadowakisaki Lighthouse offer spectacular vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Jogasaki Coast, Oshima, and the Izu Islands.
Izu Skyline Drive – Distance to Toll Booth 7km
Izu Skyline Drive is a scenic route located on the east side of the Izu Peninsula. This approximately 48 km drive stretches along the mountain ridge from the Amagi Kogen Toll Gate to the Hakone Turnpike Toll Booth. Along the route, there are several pull-offs that offer stunning views of Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, and Sagami Bay.
This beautiful drive is perfect for a leisurely car tour and serves as an excellent alternative to the busy Route 135, helping to save travel time.
Mt Komuro – Distance 8 km
Komuroyama Park is renowned for its beautiful flower viewing, featuring seasonal blooms throughout the year. In April, the park’s grand Azalea Garden bursts into color with thousands of vibrant red azaleas. You can stroll through the Azalea Tunnel, where towering azaleas line the path on both sides.
There is a paved trail leading to the summit of Mount Komuro, or you can take a chair lift to the top. At the summit, you’ll find an observation deck where you can enjoy stunning views of the park, the Kawana Golf Course, Oshima Island, and the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean.
Ito Onsen Tokaikan – Distance 10 km
Ito Onsen Tokaikan first opened its doors in 1928. This three-story building was constructed by master craftsmen using high-quality wood. Renowned for its traditional Japanese architecture and intricate woodwork, it is a historically significant site where visitors can tour the rooms and admire the detailed wood carvings.
In 2003, it was restored and reopened to the public as a historical and cultural landmark. Tokaikan is one of the few surviving wooden hot spring ryokans from the Showa Period. Some rooms showcase historical artifacts that provide insight into the building's rich history. A tea room is available for visitors, and the onsen is open for bathing on weekends and public holidays.
Ito Marine Town Roadside Station – Distance 12 km
Ito Marine Town is a roadside rest stop situated on Highway 135, just as you enter Ito City from the north. It’s a wonderful place to pause during your travels to or from Izu. The location features a promenade along the marina, where you can take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the beautiful views.
The marina bazaar includes a variety of shops and restaurants offering everything from souvenirs to local seafood specialties. Additionally, there is an onsen (hot spring), sightseeing boat tours, and a free foot bath that overlooks the marina. Take a break during your journey and spend some time at Ito Marine Town.
Wasabi fields of Ikadaba – Distance 22.5 km
A short drive inland from I Love Izu, near the city of Izu, lies the Wasabi Fields of Ikadaba. This location features vast fields of green wasabi plants cultivated in the traditional Tatamiishi style, which has its origins in the Izu region. The wasabi is planted in a terraced area alongside a river filled with cool, clean water and surrounded by trees.
The scenery evokes the charm of traditional Japan, making it a worthwhile destination to visit in person. It also serves as a refreshing getaway on a hot summer day.
Kawazu Seven Waterfalls – Distance 39 km
Further south of Ito, in the mountains above the town of Kawazu, lies Kawazu Seven Falls. Kawazu Nanadaru is a series of seven waterfalls, ranging in height from 2 meters to the impressive 30-meter tall Odaru Falls.
A spectacular and well-maintained hiking trail, complete with bridges and wooden stairs, leads you through the forest to each waterfall. Additionally, nearby on National Route 414, you can find the two-story corkscrew-style Kawazu Nanadaru Loop Bridge, which is also worth a visit.
Shirahama Beach – Distance 38 km
Shirahama Beach is a beautiful white sand beach located on Highway 135, just outside the city of Shimoda. It is one of the most famous and popular attractions in the Izu region, attracting visitors from around the world who come to enjoy the sun and sand. This area is well-known for its excellent surfing conditions, making it a great destination for beachgoers looking for a fun day out.
At the northern edge of the beach, next to the Shirahama Jinja Shinto shrine, stands a picturesque torii gate on a large rock that juts out into the sea. There are also convenience stores and shops nearby where you can grab a snack or rent beach gear. The swimming season starts in May and typically lasts until late October, offering plenty of time for beach activities.
Shuzenji Temple
Shuzenji Temple, located in the picturesque town of Shuzenji on the Izu Peninsula, Japan, is a historic Zen Buddhist temple founded by the revered monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai) in 807 AD. This serene temple is renowned for its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful surroundings, including a small bamboo forest and the famous Shuzenji Onsen hot springs. The temple has a rich history, having been a site of significant events during the Kamakura period, including the imprisonment and tragic deaths of members of the Minamoto clan.
Today, visitors can enjoy meditation classes, explore the temple's grounds, and experience the peaceful ambiance that has made Shuzenji Temple a beloved destination for centuries.
